I love rocks. My boys and I collect them from the beach, and nature walks. We bring them home and display them on shelves and window sills to remind us of adventures we have had. So naturally, anything made with rocks appeal to me. These caged rock creatures are adorable on a shelf, window sill or in your garden. Hand crafted from Haitii, they also make great gifts.
rocks in my garden, rocks in my head.

Are you a nature freak, tree hugger, beach comber?

If you love nature, you need to check out www.thehouseofkat.com. Are you a nature freak, a tree hugger, beach comber, or gardner? I am all of these things. I love the simplicity of a freshly bloomed flower, where just the day before was a closed bud. I love planting a tree and watching it grow or, watching the birds discover it. My boys and I love to search the beach for treasures - driftwood, shells and smooth rocks to proudly display at home. Do you clip and save the tide chart? Do you know when the next full moon is? I do. It makes me feel a part of something much greater than myself. It keeps thing in perspective. That’s what I love about nature, and the world around me. Simply put, it keeps me grounded. My new collection of home furnishings was inspired by just that – the natural world around us. Elements that bring the outside in…sustainable, recyclable, natural. Check it out at www.thehousweofkat.com. Nature freaks, tree huggers, beach combers and gardners are all welcome!

accent wall can add big punch for little cost

I recently decided that nowwas the time to paint the kitchen . The same kitchen wall that I have been looking at every day for the past two years, since the ice build-up and subsequent leak in the ceiling and exterior wall. Yes, I said 2 winters ago. Anyway, I did not have enough of the existing wall color, so decided to use an accent color. Wow! It looked fantastic! So, I decided to paint another accent wall. So here’s the idea. Use up some left over paint and add color to your rooms one accent wall at a time.
Freshen up with a new coat of paint

While I was sweeping my mud room floor again, (I have boys ages 6 and 9), I noticed (again), the walls are really looking bad. In fact, often when I come through that area, I think to myself, I need to paint those walls.
Maine’s weather is going to continue to be rainy, I have some left over paint, and the boys are with their Dad this weekend. I think I know what I am doing this weekend! Next week this time I will be smiling as I enter The House of Kat!
3 quick ideas to color your world

Today, as I awake to another grey day, I am reminded of the old saying: “April Showers bring May flowers”. It may be grey outside, but soon it will be full of color and our dispositions will be different. It’s amazing how color around us can change our mood. Whether it be a bright blue sky, or a freshly painted accent wall. Here are three ideas for infusing color in your home.
Paint an accent wall
Add a fresh bouquet of flowers to your table or night stand
Paint your toe nails
Wow, there is grass under that melting snow!

Spring is a time for hope and new beginnings, even in these uncertain times. It occurred to me the other day when I found myself catching an earful of the nighlty news, that the birds don’t know not to chirp because of the economy. The snow doesn’t know not to melt. The crocuses don’t know not to spring up through the still some what frozen earth. It also occurred to me that perhaps, if we were a bit more in touch with nature, and not so much in touch with the nightly news, we would focus on our appreciation of the melting snow and the grass that will soon be green underneath, instead of the gloom and doom. Enjoy those melting snow banks!
